What / which learning platform for an LTSP-system?

This article is the very first entry in Educoss blog in English. Educoss is a project funded by European Social Fund that promotes the use of FLOSS software in schools and education in Finland. As the target group consists of Finns the Finnish language is also used.

Now we are trying to tackle a problem which is so hard to solve that we need all the possible help from all possible sources. That is the reason for using English language in this case I believe our work is going to be beneficial for all schools and educational institutions using Linux, especially LTSP, Linux Terminal Server Project. It is a thin client solution running on Linux operating system.

There is a number of schools in Finland using LTSP. You can find a map of the schools here. It is not complete but you can see that the trend covers all of the country, at least when it comes to land area. Distribution of population is another issue.

The department of education of Kemi has received project funding from the Finnish National Board of Education. The goal of the project is to find a learning platform that would work seamlessly together with LTSP. The platform should be FLOSS software.

Another goal is that we are trying to find out how to ensure the possibility of changing materials from one instance of the platform software to another. The best guess for now is to follow a standard called SCORM.

I am just about to begin to know SCORM. As far as I know it is the only real existing method to ensure the interchangeability of learning content. If you have other suggestions or can suggest me good sources of information, please let me know.

As for the learning platforms I bumped into a list of Open Source learning platforms and we shall start by testing those. The list is however quite old (2005) and any more up to date information is more than welcome.

Let's solve this one, shall we?
